Students Challenged by Environmental Justice Course

Students at the Cleveland School of the Arts participated in an environmental justice course where they were challenged by local organizations to solve real and urgent problems. The course’s teachers – biology teacher Charulata Mehlotra and English teacher Patricia Fryer-Jolly – gave the students the opportunity to learn about food deserts and water usage in Cleveland while also developing their skills at researching, collaborating, and presenting to audiences that were invested in hearing their ideas. Even more importantly, the students got to experience what it meant to exercise their agency and make an impact in their community. Watch below to hear firsthand from the students and teachers about this powerful experience.

“You get a lot of hands-on experience in a class like this unlike some of the other classes, and I think it would be really beneficial to take these skills that you learned from this class out into the real world.”

-Olivia, Student at Cleveland School of the Arts
