Local News Station Challenges Students, Provokes Deep Learning

When Taylor Rush’s summer school students were given a challenge by their local NBC station to come up with a plan for a community garden, she didn’t expect the profound and deep learning that would result. By taking on a complex problem with no simple solution, Taylor’s students gained the opportunity to conduct deep research, practice the art of revision, and meaningfully collaborate to come up with a solution. They gained new skills and confidence that can transfer into their normal school year and beyond. Check out the video below to hear Taylor’s recollections of her student’s experiences.

“To tie in that higher-stakes, real world problem or real world idea, I think that just raises the bar. They know we’re doing this for someone else and our idea actually might get used.”

– Taylor Rush, High School Teacher at Columbus City Schools
